Did you know that your glue works off of room temperature and humidity ? Have you been experiencing problems with your glue getting tacky , bad retention, or when you go to brush the set when you think you're done , only to notice a few to brush off? Well let's start with the basics .... WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW... The active ingredient in all eyelash extension adhesives is cyanoacrylates. When this comes into contact with moisture in the air it forms a chemical reaction and polymerises forming a chain reaction and solidifies. This is called 'curing'. There are three main types: - Ethyl: A fast curing rate, a strong strength sometimes with strong fumes - Butyl: Weak fumes and a slower curing rate - Ethoaxyethyl: A very slow curing rate, no fumes and ideal for sensitive clients If your humidity is too high the eyelash adhesive will not cure correctly and shock polymerization takes places. This results in a weaker bond with the natural lash. If humidity is too low then the curing time will be slower as there is not enough moisture to 'cure' the eyelash adhesive and again your client will have poor retention with the adhesive becoming hard and stiff. MONITORING YOUR HUMIDITY When applying eyelash extensions, your ideal room temperature should be between 22c - 23c and your ideal humidity should be 55%. This however can vary with different eyelash adhesives and it is always recommended you check with your supplier or manufacturer. To monitor your humidity levels it is suggested that you purchase a hygrometer which measures the humidity/moisture in your treatment room. Humidity too high? Then try opening your windows or purchasing a de-humidifier which can lower the humidity by sucking in the air and removing the moisture into a tank within the unit and then releasing the air back into the room. A slower drying eyelash adhesive can also be considered. Humidity too low? Then you need a humidifier. This works by releasing water vapour into the air to increase humidity. This is ideal when you have the heating on and when the air can be dry. Alternatively, consider a faster drying eyelash adhesive. TIPS ON INCREASING THE SHELF LIFE - Always keep in original packaging with silica gel (this controls humidity) and in a dark cool place away from sunlight - Write down the date of purchase and opening of your Adhesive - Keep away from moisture and do not store in the fridge - Clean the nozzle with foil before replacing the lid - Replace and tighten the lid to stop any moisture or air getting in - When carrying out an eyelash extension treatment use a foil covered glue ring and replace approximately every 20- 30 minutes. Following these guidelines will help ensure you are getting the best from your glue and will give your clients longer lasting retention.
